Parklife 2012

PARKLIFE IS THIS WEEKEND! OMG! GTFO!  Parklife is the first of the summer music festivals and this year the line is epic; Justice, Passion Pit, Nero, Parachute Youth and of couse my favourite… FLUME! If you don’t know FLUME, he is a rad DJ from Sydney and you need to check him out right now! Usually, Parklife is the first chance to dust of your denim cut offs and everyone is running about faking tanning the crap out of themselves, but this year its going to be like 16 and raining so I’ve had to rethink my outfit choices. First up is what I like to call the ‘I kinda wanna pick up today’ because its a little sexier the number two, which is the super sensible and probs a lot more comfy option.

Yolandi Visser

Yesterday at Future Music I saw Die Antwoord and fell madly in love with their singer Yolandi Visser. The South African probably isn’t everyones cup of tea, but I dig her crazy crack addict alien style! She has such a commanding presence on stage and she isn’t contrived, unlike another crazy blonde ‘fashion icon’ we all know *cough*lady gaga *cough*

Her band Die Antwoord are described as Zef Hip Hop, apparently Zef is an Afrikaans word, which roughly translates to the English word “common” its what the white middle class of South Africa describe themselves as. I think Yoldani sums is up pretty well by saying “It’s associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and shit. Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style.”

Matt Corby at the Corner

My best friends house mate is a bit of pretentious muso, to put it nicely. As we were getting ready to go to see Matt Corby at the Corner Hotel he was telling us about this music festival he has organised. It was in a small town in the middle of nowhere, with bands I’d never heard of and they ran out of beer half way through. He was then telling us that he was thinking of getting Matt Corby to play at the festival next year. He asked us if he had a much of a following… Well he sold out 4 shows at the Corner Hotel and his song ‘Brother’ came in 3rd in Triple J’s hottest 100, so yeh I guess he does have a bit of a following. I’m sure he’d love to play your festival though!

So Matt Corby at the Corner Hotel… one word – AMAZING. The kid can sing, there is no doubt. He got his break on Idol, coming second i believe, thankfully he has hasn’t faded into obscurity like so many other idol ‘stars’. He has signed with Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons label Communion and after taking nearly a year off to work in a cafe and write songs he released his EP – Into the Flame. Take a few minutes to check out the video below of Matt’s cover of The Black Keys, Lonely Boy… it is a beautiful piece of music.
