Ksubi Kustom Kompetition

The good folks over the General Pants Co Bubble are holding a kick ass competition to design your very own Ksubi Kustom vest. If you win they will make it… You know what, thats all well and good but when I read this “you will be able to experience the design process first hand and collaborate with the Kustom team to produce your piece.” I nearly blew my proverbial load. I have had a massive style crush on Ksubi for as long as I can remember, actually since they were frickin Tsubi! It’s like an old school love affair and the idea of like getting to hang out and collaborate with them is about the best thing I could  imagine. The Ksubi Kustom studio is located behind their Paddington store and looks like this..

I would be open to selling my first born to hang out and create here. Anyway I had a crack at a couple of designs, basically you have to use three of five elements; studding, painting, patches, bleaching or shredding. They said they wanted lots of colour so my first design is a pretty colourful, My Little Pony inspired vest; it has a rad pink hood, butter soft yellow leather across the back and décolletage, my little pony patches on the pockets and back, and some sexy studding! The second design references the current Ksubi Collection. The Crushed Crome pattern on the back and shoulders is from the current collection as are the American Flags. The Cross Dollar is pretty well known Ksubi sign and that has been painted on to the front breast. There are some studs about the place and lastly there is a pretty gangster All Seeing Eye patch across the back of the vest.

Let me know what you think, you can check them out here and here and if you want to check out some of the other designs or submit your own go here!

vauxlair, australian, homes, fashion, style, sydney, bondi, tamarama, interior, wooden table, white floors,(Matty Bouris’ ridiculously cool Tamarama apartment.)

If like me, you get off on perving on the homes people that are cooler, and more creative than you could ever hope to be, then you will love Vauxlair. An Aussie website that explores the homes of trendy young Australians, with a bit of a fondness for what I would lovingly describe as ‘Bondi Hipsters’.

Vauxlair has a refreshingly lo-fi vibe,  the houses aren’t over styled and it’s got a chilled, people actually live here feel, all the way down to the dirty dishes in the sink! Which you know, is what’s missing from so many of the big blogs that do this kind of thing, they are just shooting contrived vignettes and spotless houses with no TV’s in the lounge room. It’s uninspiring and frankly it makes me feel like I should put down the computer and go clean the kitchen, ya know incase someone stops by to photograph it! Vauxlair is the opposite, Vauxlair is keeping it real. It’s kinda like the Selby, when it was good.

Vauxlair, seems to have some pretty cool friends too, having snapped the houses of one half of Flight Facilities James Lyall, pro surfer Dion Agius and my fave Bondi Hipster, Pip Edwards from Sass and Bide.

It’s a voyeuristic insight into the lives of some rad young Aussies and I can’t get enough of it!

Winter Essentials

The other day I was talking with a friend of mine who has recently moved down to Melbourne from northern New South. With winter already setting in down here she was asking me what she was going to need to survive a Melbourne winter. It got me thinking about all the essential clothing that is needed for a Melbourne winter. I’ve spent the better part of the last 5 years putting together a cohesive winter wardrobe. It’s now full of pieces that are light enough to carry when the suns out, but that are also warm enough to stop you freezing when icy winds from the bay come rolling through. My staples consist of layering pieces, lots of wool, light coats and plenty of scarves. I’ve pulled together 3 key pieces I’m lusting over to get me through this winter.

I am a huge fan of military jackets; I bought one from sportsgirl about 2 years ago and have absolutely thrashed it since. So my eye was immediately drawn to this gorgeous Style Stalker Rebellion Parka, it is an absolute must have! The shearling only extends down the front of the jacket, which is great as a full shearling lining would be far too much for an Aussie winter; it just does not get cold enough! I certainly want to invest in one of these bad boys this winter!

As I can’t afford to a splash a couple ‘G on all the McQueen dresses I adore, I have my sights firmly set of this stunning McQueen scarf. The colours are so versatile—it would go very nicely with the Style Stalker jacket—it’s the kind of thing you could just keep in your bag to throw on with anything. When it goes out of fashion I might even have it framed and hang it on my wall!

Don’t you just love them!? They are the perfect mix of classic design and unassuming good looks. I can see pairing them with dark denim skinny legs and Breton tees; or with floral dresses and a chunky cardi. These bushed leather Rag and Bone lovelies will keep your feet dry and toasty warm all day; the short stacked heel is also great for a bit of height—which is good for those of us who are vertically challenged.

So that’s my top 3 for this winter, what are your winter essentials?

Three Bags Full

On a cool summer morning in the hipster suburb of Fitzroy, in between open for inspections, Dani and I made our first trip to Three Bags Full. Having heard only good things about it for the last 2 years our expectations were high to say the least. We arrived at 10am and were greeted by a line running half the length of the block, which of course is to be expected at any reputable café at 10am on a Saturday morning. As we stood in line I took the opportunity to do a little people watching, doctor types in an array of brightly coloured lycra gear sat next to tv stars from mildly successful Australian sit-coms; while Land Rovers lined the streets, the occupants of which sent the queue all most the entire length of the block. Once upon a time it was rare to see the Toorak Tractor so far North of the Yarra, but times certainly have changed. After 20 minutes we were seated the waitress took our drinks order and left us to pour over the menu. I was tossing up between the Smoked Trout Omlette, which is considered by Three Bags Full to be vegetarian— not sure how that works— and the Twice Baked French Toast. I decide to go with the French toast, while Dani went for the Atlantic Eggs on Toast. Even though it was wolfed down in about 10 seconds as we rushed off to our next inspection it was a bloody good feed. The toast was thick and soft, while the rhubarb and mascarpone were a beautiful combination that was neither to sweet nor to heavy. Dani was a fan of her Atlantic Eggs, the salmon and softly poached eggs looked delicious! After our meal we headed inside to pay and our waitress had arranged two take away coffees on the house for us as our order had taken rather a long time to come out! It’s gestures like that, that separate the good from the great and Three Bags Full is certainly one of the greats.

Stolen Girlfriends Club

So today while surfing on the interwebs I cam across the newest Stolen Girlfriends Club campaign. Shot by Derek Henderson, the raw rock n roll vibe of the campaign took me straight back to my to my high school days. Hanging out with boys in bands in rooms so thick with posters you had no idea what colour the walls originally were, drinking goon from cracked, floral mugs, eating mi-goreng at 2am straight from the pot cause you couldn’t find a clean bowl. Those were the days!

Anyway aside from the AWESOME campaign the collection its self pretty bad ass, I am loving the lace dresses with baroque skeletal detail, I am also a fan of the silk georgette dressed with the ‘nervous man’ print that Stolen Girlfriends Club describe as “Russian dolls, crooked Russian pirates, skulls, exploding hearts and bottles of poison” the whole collection has a crazy South American meets Russian rock n roll theme going on. Gotta say, Stolen Girlfriends Club have nailed it again!

Matt Corby at the Corner

My best friends house mate is a bit of pretentious muso, to put it nicely. As we were getting ready to go to see Matt Corby at the Corner Hotel he was telling us about this music festival he has organised. It was in a small town in the middle of nowhere, with bands I’d never heard of and they ran out of beer half way through. He was then telling us that he was thinking of getting Matt Corby to play at the festival next year. He asked us if he had a much of a following… Well he sold out 4 shows at the Corner Hotel and his song ‘Brother’ came in 3rd in Triple J’s hottest 100, so yeh I guess he does have a bit of a following. I’m sure he’d love to play your festival though!

So Matt Corby at the Corner Hotel… one word – AMAZING. The kid can sing, there is no doubt. He got his break on Idol, coming second i believe, thankfully he has hasn’t faded into obscurity like so many other idol ‘stars’. He has signed with Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons label Communion and after taking nearly a year off to work in a cafe and write songs he released his EP – Into the Flame. Take a few minutes to check out the video below of Matt’s cover of The Black Keys, Lonely Boy… it is a beautiful piece of music.

The most hated man in Australia?

Probably not quite, but Thomas Berdych didn’t win too many new fans in Melbourne yesterday after he refused to shake the hand of his opponent Nico Almagro after four gruelling hours of tennis. Almagro hit Berdych with a cheap shot and dropped him earlier in the match which Berdych said was the reason behind the handshake snub.

Me and B got tickets through work and honestly can say that I have never seen anything like it, Berdych was literally booed off court by everyone at Hisense arena. It’s a tough one to say whether Berdych’s actions were right or wrong. But in my opinion it was immensely disrespectful to Almagro and it was not in the spirit of the game.

If you want to read more about the match, check out this article in The Age

So last night I took my friends E and L to Taco Truck for dinner. I’ve never been before but all my cool indy friends love it, pretty much its a truck that sells tacos, it moves around from place to place everyday. They do nachos and burritos, you have to make sure you get there early so they don’t sell out, but its worth it! They are so tasty and the super super hot sauce is a must!

If your in Melbs you can find out where the Taco Truck will be via their Facebook or Twitter
